KotykBiologia plantarum 26:303, 1984 | DOI: 10.1007/BF02902914 Sugar-beet invertase preparation was found to be highly temperature-dependent in its activity (Topt = 40 °C), to be decreased by bivalent metal salts (especially CaCl2 and MgCl2 and relatively unaffected by heavy metal cations from the end of the periodic table. Inhibitors of SH groups, such as iodoacetamide andp-chloromercuribenzoate, were highly inhibitory while ouabain was a medium-strength inhibitor, with 2,4-dinitrophenol having no effect. The intracellular pH of 7.3, corresponding to the optimum for invertase (at 7.2) could be substantially decreased (to 5.8) by exposure of cells of whole sugar-beet roots to carbon dioxide in aqueous solution. |

ČatskýBiologia plantarum 26:461-470, 1984 | DOI: 10.1007/BF02909600 The rates of maintenance and growth components of leaf dark respiration of a C3 plant (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) and C4 plant (Zea mays L.) as affected by temperature were studied using the McCree concept. Respiration rates were measured by means of infrared gas analysis in a closed gas exchange system. In both C3 and C4 species RD and Rm increased with temperature in the temperature range (15-62 °C) studied. RG depended on temperature with an optimum near the temperature optimum of gross photosynthetic rate, Pg. Significant correlation between RD and RM and between RG and PG was found. |
Water relations pattern of understorey species influenced by sunflecksP. EliášBiologia plantarum 25:68-74, 1983 | DOI: 10.1007/BF02878269 Water relations of plant cenopopulations of understorey species (7 herbaceous perennials, 1 shrub, and 1 tree seedling) growing in an oak-hornbeam forest in SW. Slovakia is markedly influenced by natural sunflecks moving on the forest floor, where stomatal conductance and transpiration rate are significantly higher than in shade areas. In the course of a day, the leaf stomatal conductance fluctuates, following irradiance of the leaf, from minimum in full shade to maximum in sunflecks, including intermediate values in transient conditions. Therefore, there is also a large variability in water saturation deficit and transpiration rate within the cenopopulations of the understorey species. These variations should be considered in modelling the physiology of woodland understorey species. |

Java), the first (younger) leaf senesced later than the second (older) leaf as shown by the decline in chlorophyll and protein contents. Kinetin treatment significantly retarded senescence of leaves, while abscisic acid (ABA) treatment promoted it. The second leaf exported more32P to the newly emerged growing leaf at the early stages than the first leaf, which always showed higher retention of32P than the second one. Kinetin treatment lengthened the duration of32P export and also increased the retention capacity of both leaves, while ABA had the opposite effect. The second leaf showed a higher depletion of nitrogen and phosphorus but à lower depletion of potassium than the first leaf. Kinetin treatment retarded the decline in nutrient content (N and P) while ABA treatment hastened it. Neither growth substance had any effect on potassium content. The content(s) of endogenous eytokinin-like substance(s) decreased while ABA-like substance(s) increased in the two leaves with senescence: these changes in the second leaf took place earlier than in the first leaf. |

Effect of water stress on leaf and root growth, and water uptake ofGmelina arborea ROXB. seedlingsO. OsonubiBiologia plantarum 26:246-252, 1984 | DOI: 10.1007/BF02902903 Young seedlings ofGmelina arborea Roxb. were subjected to 2 weeks of drought. Despite the gradual reduction in stomatal conductance, leaf and root growth was not affected until the later part of the stress period. This was attributed to solute adjustment in the roots of the plants. As the severity of water stress increased, root growth was prolific in all the soil segments. As a result, water in the lowest soil segment was used to maintain plant turgor, which in turn sustains the leaf and root growth during the water-stress treatment. The influence of soil water content and soil water potential upon soil water uptake rate was also evaluated on soil profile basis. Rates of extraction began to decline in all soil segments as soon as soil water potential fell below -0.06 MPa, presumably as a result of vapour gaps between the root and soil (root: soil interface resistance). It is suggested that the growth of roots ofGmelina plants away from drying soil will minimize the resistance to water uptake. |

UPAS-120 and Parbhat were grown in the field under two irrigation treatments: no irrigation and irrigation when cumulative pan evaporation was equal to 50 per cent depletion of available water content in one metre root zone depth. Diurnal changes in leaf water potential and stomatal conductance were recorded on two daysi.e. October 1, 1979 and October 28, 1979 which corresponded to reproductive growth stage of the crop. Plant water potential decreased rapidly during the day up to about 15.00 and increased during evening hours. Higher leaf water potential was recorded in irrigated treatment on both dates. Adaxial and abaxial stomata differed in their response to water stress. Adaxial stomatal conductance started declining during early morning hours, however, abaxial conductance firstly increased up to 09.00 then decreased and increased again in the afternoon except in irrigated crop of cv. UPAS-120 on 28th October, where conductance never increased after 09.00. The reduced rate of stomatal conductance during day hours may be identified as one of the characteristics responsible for drought tolerance in pigeon pea. |

The system shows considerable promise as an extremely mild separation process and has been used to separate two unknown cytokinins from seedlings ofHordeum vulgare cv. Steptoe. |

GuerrierBiologia plantarum 26:22-28, 1984 | DOI: 10.1007/BF02880421 Adsorption, absorption and translocation of sodium were compared in three species showing an ascending degree in tolerance to salinity: red cabbage (tolerant) shows higher Root Cationic Exchange Capacity than tomato (sensitive) or radish (intermediate). At low NaCl concentrations, tomato accumulates the greatest quantities of sodium; but Na+ translocation remains proportional to the quantity absorbed in the three plants. At high salt concentrations, diffusive phenomena explain similar accumulation in every plant, but red cabbage quickly localises 50% of Na+ amount in cotyledons, while this element stays stored in tomato roots. The consequence of these three nutrition phases was discussed in relation to the behaviour observed at the germination time of these same plants. |
The effect of plasmolysis and deplasmolysis on the permeability of plant membranesL. AdamecBiologia plantarum 26:128, 1984 | DOI: 10.1007/BF02902278 The overall washing out of ions, especially86Rb+ (as the tracer for K+), from hypocotyl segments of pumpkin (Cucurbita pepo L.) into distilled water or a CaCl2 solution was studied, during plasmolysis with a saccharose solution and during deplasmolysis. Compartimental analysis was used to evaluate the86Rb+ washing out kinetics. During plasmolysis, the washing out of86Rb+ increases, due to two processes whose half-times are lower than those during washing out into the CaCl2 solution. During deplasmolysis, the permeability of plasmalemma and tonoplast is substantially descreased, leading to washing out of most86Rb+ from the cells. Plasmolysis differs from a mere decrease in the turgor pressure in the fact that after exchange for a hypotonic solution the membranes are irreversibly damaged. |
Some properties of pea cholinesterase and its activity in plant parts at different growth stagesKvěta Vacková, M. Free and membrane-bound forms of the enzyme were separated by extracting the enzyme from pea shoots with buffers differing in ionic strength. The ratio of the free cholinesterase to the membrane-bound one fluctuated between 1 : 1 and 1 : 2.5. The free cholinesterase was inhibited by neostigmine (0.1mmoll-1) by 50%, the membrane-bound enzyme by 90%. The pH optimum of cholinesterase activity was 8.5, the temperature optimum 37 °C. The enzyme activity was increased by some cations in this order: Mg2+ < < K+. The Km value for the substrate S-acetylthiocholine iodide was 250 μmoll-1, the enzyme activity being inhibited by concentrations higher than 3 mmoll-1 of this substrate. |

Both the compounds stimulated bud initiation at relatively low concentrations. Simultaneous addition of an anticytokinin did not counteract the stimulatory action of the 2 chemicals. Their stimulatory effects were also clear when expiants were pre-incubated for 2 h with 1 μM of either of the 2 substances. The treatment with cyclic AMP and traumatic acid may favourably modify some physiological process which is triggered by excising expiants (wounding) and leads to adventitious bud initiation. |
Gradients of certain elements in segments of maize leaves of different ageM. R. Sarić, B. Krtić, B. JocićBiologia plantarum 26:423-432, 1984 | DOI: 10.1007/BF02909591 At pollination of maize plants, the old leaves, those of medium age, and young leaves, cut into segments transversally (10 segments) and longitudinally (8 segments and main vein), were sampled and concentrations of N, P, K, Ca, and Mg were determined. Then concentration gradients of these elements in maize leaves of different age were evaluated. The results obtained show that concentration gradient of N was the most evident in transversal segments of leaves of different ages, in particular in young leaves, that of K in the old leaves, and the Ca concentration gradient in leaves of medium age. The phosphorus concentration gradient was weakly expressed and in the young leaves not recorded at all. In longitudinal segments, concentration gradients of elements varied in leaves of different ages. |
